Forge Welding an Axe Eye
On July 22, 2012 by jaustinAxes forged in the Viking era (and later) had eyes which were formed by wrapping a drawn-out shank around the back of the head and forge welding the resulting lap together toward the blade. In the following Youtube link you can see the welding process performed on an axe which has already been lapped together to form a traditional, Viking style eye. The actual process takes about twice as long as the Youtube segment, but proceeds at the same pace with the same techniques.
I was told about your video from Walter Spensberger. We stayed with them last August, while traveling. We heard many good things about you, Jim. So, it was fun to put a face (on the video) to the stories. Have a wonderful day.
Rosemary and Peter Johnson
Hi Rosemary and Peter: Thanks for reaching out to me on the forgedaxes.com website. Sorry for the months of delay in noticing your comment in forgedaxes.com I’m not too internet savvy and my comment box got filled with spam (22,000 bogus comments!). A friend just helped me improve the site immensely and take care of the spam problem. It’s amazing to hear from people with a link to the Spensbergers. Are you still in touch with them? I hope to visit them in the near future – it’s been so long. Please visit if you’re every in northern California.
Yours, Jim.
